    Tip #1 Keep your vehicle well maintained. Keep your car engine tuned, tires inflated to the proper pressure and air filter's clean. This can improve your gas mileage up to 7%.

    Tip #2 Drive the speed limit. This is highly cost efficient for a couple of reasons; no speeding tickets, which can cost you a bundle and much better gas mileage. Plus, avoid starting and stopping quickly, you'll save on maintenance costs.

    Tip #3 Remove unnecessary weight from your car. For every 100lbs you unload you can improve your gas mileage up to 2%. Avoid using a roof rack; this adds weight as well as wind resistance that also lowers gas mileage.

    Tip #4 Walk, ride a bike or use public transit. Whenever possible, walking or riding a bike can save a substantial amount of money on gas. In large metropolitan areas, take fewer cab rides. Using public transit can save you $5-$15 per trip.

    Tip #5 Choose a vehicle with low operating costs. Before you purchase a car, research comparable models for insurance, gasoline, maintenance, and repair costs. By choosing a vehicle with low operating costs, it will save you thousands of dollars over the lifetime of the vehicle.

    Tip #6 Check insurance premiums. This is very important for older cars. It may not be cost effective to maintain comprehensive or collision coverage. Also, bundling your home and car insurance as well as increasing your deductible can lower your monthly premiums.

    Tip #7 Use one car. This may sound impossible but you may be surprised what a little planning can accomplish. For most families the vehicle is the most expensive item other than the home.
